This increasing trend I believe is being used to increase search returns on google. Google ranks in part based on the words used to link to your site. So if lots of people did the following.

wacky halifax

then google would increase my rank for searches for wacky halifax. So I think goal of blog spammers is to increase the number of pages linking to their site with the keywords rather than actaully generating click through links on the sites. This is even more evedent in that they comment on old posts, not the frontpage post, I assume hoping that the author won’t notice the comment but that when google spiders it will find the link.
