Understanding B2 Spam

Posted in General by jadz on the November 5th, 2004

I thought I would put a few words down about B2 spam since people have made comments about it. The people who spam blogs use the fact that anyone that has a B2 board has the same input text boxes (FORM’s in HTML). They are then able to write a program that will just submit text to theses standard input textboxes. This is how they are able to spam so many sites with so many posts.

Most people have implemented security through obscurity, by changing the name of the input box like the one below

so their little automated program doesn’t know how to submit comments. Usually they won’t take the time to go and customize their site just for your blog, they want to hit as many blogs as they can with the least possible effort.

Some people implement security that is very hard to get around by machines, such as the distorted letters in an image that you have to type in in order to submit your comment. This is done by large sites such as google for site submission so that people have to enter items by hand. This is likely a better method but requires more user input which isn’t always a good thing with blogs as people are less likely to jot down a few words if they also have to decipher a code.

In other news… I put on a new (lower) ball joint on the Cadillac and also new disks and new caliper. It turns out that I didn’t have to do the brake work but it was very very easy to do and the brakes do feel nice with brand new rotors/pads so its all good. I will try to put on a new bearing (can you see my pattern of trouble shooting here, keep on replacing things until you figure out what the issue is :) so I am hoping for the skys to clear a bit today.

I’m getting absolutely killed with spam on my site. Not allowing links in the comments helped for a while but now they just aren’t posting links so its all getting through. I’m thinking about going with the new blog system that nicholson is using, it doesn’t look like hes having a problem with it. Anything else I can do before I upgrade joe? How would I go about having having the user check a box or something before they post a comment?

Joe, can you turn off the notification for comments in my email? I’m getting killed with them, like 400 every few hours. Thanks man.
