Mom gets an honorary doctor of civil laws degree!

Congratulations Mom!!!
My mom (Hetty van Gurp) was presented with an honorary doctor of civil laws degree on Sunday. It was a very nice ceremony held at the World Trade and Convention centre. Attending the ceremony makes me wish I hadn’t missed mine while I was working in Jamaica.

After receiving her honorary degree my mom addressed the graduating students with a few words of wisdom. I took some photos and also took some video of the event, but I would like to get a copy from the university photographers who had much better positioning and equipment.

Hetty van Gurp, a Halifax elementary school teacher who began Peaceful Schools International in 2001 after her son died following a bullying incident, will receive an honorary doctor of civil laws degree.

Ms. van Gurp has worked tirelessly to rid classrooms and school hallways of all forms of violence. She has given workshops around the globe, with her ideas and methods gaining renown in places as disparate as Asia, Ireland and Russia.

Who will catch me?

I spend way too much time thinking of excellent crimes I could commit if I were a crime committing sort of person. Every time I read about hurricane-related looting, I wonder about the best way to do it.

I think Id get myself a looting boat, stocked with a bunch of camping stuff, in case I got stuck in the disaster area. And it wouldnt hurt to have a big jacket that said FEMA on it. Id wait until a hurricane started to threaten a particular community and then Id steal a car and start towing my little pirate boat in that direction, monitoring the news as I went. Id set up camp near a target rich environment, tie the boat to a lamppost, up high, and wait for the storm to empty the city. Theres a good chance Id be killed by the hurricane before I did any quality looting, but thats a risk Im willing to take for free pants that arent my size.

I might bring my own decoy puppy, in case anyone saw me climbing through a broken store window. I’d just hold up the puppy and yell Its okay! I Got her!

After I did my looting or as we white people like to say: gather my supplies Id motor my little pirate boat down the main street, out to the ocean, and back to my hidden lair thats stinking of damp merchandise.

Sometime soon I plan to do some thinking about ending world hunger. But frankly, that seems harder.

How to be a Programmer: A Short, Comprehensive, and Personal Summary

I came across this document (How to be a Programmer: A Short, Comprehensive, and Personal Summary) which I admit I have not had time to read fully but I intend to.

I suspect that this article would be a good read for anyone who is a programmer or works with them.

It was a great time. $35 for 3 sessions. All electric Karts with slick tires which made it very very hard to get grip on the track. This lead to poorly driven laps by yours truely but a lot of fun. It was good to see Lucas again. He is as busy as ever. I still remember going over to St. Pat’s and being in a newspaper photo with one of his F1600 cars. Time flys.

Open Source AJAX Webmail is coming….

As written in this post in Sept. 2004….

I am hoping that there will ne a next generation of webmail that will allow for faster searching and better UI etc. to replace Squrrelmail as it seems a bit dated now and they don’t offer much in customization. A new kid on the block (google) tends to kick people in the ass.

It might be here with Round Cube webmail. I know a lot of people who have moved to gmail because it is so convinient. The othe major factor is that you don’t have to worry about backups etc (mostly because it is out of your control and you couln’t do them if you wanted.

The other thing that has changed in the past few years is that ISPs have become more and more strict about allowing outgoing mail. They have started to block outgoing SMTP transmissions which means that you can receive mail, but you can’t send it.

Now that I think about more, I’m not even going to bother spending time looking at webmail again while I still am happy with my gmail account.

And if you really want to be wow’d check out this flash demo of Zembra.
