This stuff is freeking me out. I wonder if all generations go through a similar health scare.
The particular subtype of the avian influenza virus (H5N1) that is causing serious human illness is a rapidly changing form of the virus that is capable of forming a new subtype of influenza virus if it comes into contact with a human influenza strain, exchanging genes. Current vaccines would not be effective against this new strain. This could lead to an influenza pandemic. The virus can be spread extensively since it is excreted from infected birds through oral and fecal secretions for at least 10 days. It can survive in manure for at least 3 months and in water for 4 to 30 days, depending on the temperature.
According to experts in the field, another pandemic is likely to occur. An influenza pandemic occurs when a new virus subtype is formed that is easily transmitted from person to person and for which humans do not have immunity. It can only be caused by influenza A. Previous pandemics in the 20th century, resulting in millions of deaths worldwide, occurred in 1918-19, 1957-58 and 1968-69.
It is highly unlikely that you will contract avian flu. However, to stay healthy and avoid getting influenza, it is important to wash your hands frequently, stay home if you get ill, and get a flu shot every year. If you travel to Asia, Health Canada recommends that you get a flu shot before you go, and avoid contact with live poultry, wash your hands frequently, and if you have been on a farm, ensure that your clothing and shoes are cleaned and free of manure and soil.
