Car Chase in Halifax

Brittany and I were just surrounded by the car chase here in Halifax that you will likely hear about in the news. The car swerved around us while we were driving home on South Park. I thought it was just an idiot driver swerving so as not to get stuck behind the traffic that turns right on South St, but after he swerved on the inside of my he swerved to the outside lane facing oncoming traffic. At this point the police car also pulled out behind me and started to chase the car.

The White Pontiac Grand Prix pulled a u-turn at Ingles and then bolted back along South Park towards spring garden. Brittany and I turned around in a very safe manner and followed the action around town for about 10 minutes, back around the commons, and then eventually saw where the Police had apparently spun his car out and then boxed him in.

    Driver faces slew of charges
Three police officers hurt after lengthy pursuit through city

    By DAVENE JEFFREY Staff Reporter

A Halifax man who allegedly tried to kill three police officers with a car Sunday night may be suffering from a mental illness, a court was told Monday.

James Robert MacPhee, 25, faces a slew of charges in connection with a game of vehicular cat and mouse that played out on the streets of Halifax.

Mr. MacPhee is charged with three counts of attempted murder, two of assault causing bodily harm, single charges of stealing and possessing a stolen car, dangerous driving and fleeing police, four counts of leaving the scene of an accident, five counts each of mischief and assault with a weapon (a vehicle) and three charges of attempted assault with a vehicle

A lanky Mr. MacPhee walked into Halifax provincial court with a black T-shirt pulled over the top of his head covering his long red hair like a makeshift do-rag.

Crown attorney Paul Carvery requested Mr. MacPhee be kept in custody while police continue to investigate.

Mr. Carvery said the case file mentions that due to Mr. MacPhee’s behaviour at the time of his arrest, police suspect he may need a mental assessment.

Police tracked a man driving a stolen car for more than two hours Sunday evening, using the car’s global positioning system.

The pursuit began around 8 p.m. when officers spotted the vehicle in the city’s west end. Officers followed it for a few minutes, then broke off but kept track of the vehicle’s movements.

At 10:30 p.m. the car drove over a police spike belt but kept going. The driver was cornered at about 10:45 p.m. on Spring Garden Road.

Police report the car was driven fast toward their vehicles and hit two of them. Three officers were injured — a female and a male each received hand injuries and another male officer hurt his leg and shoulder.

Mr. MacPhee returns to court Wednesday for a bail hearing.
