How to save my finger.
As most everyone knows, I got married on October 4th 2008, a date very close to my Fathers birthday (Oct. 1st) and by Brother’s birthday (Oct. 5th).
After looking at the local jewelry shops around Halifax, I decided that I really liked the colour of Tungsten Carbide wedding rings. They have a grayish tint that I would almost describe as ‘gunmetal’ from my days of being interested in car wheels.
Getting to the point… there is a rumour that you can not remove a Tungsten Carbide ring in an emergency. This is not true. Though Tungsten is more than four times as hard as Titanium (which is why people like it for rings, because it is so hard it maintains its shine) it is very brittle.
If you ever need to remove my ring, you simply need to put it in a set of vice grips. The procedure is as follows.
- Tighten the vice grips to be tight on the ring and then close them.
- Open the vice grips, tighten by one quarter turn, then close them.
- Repeat until the ring cracks.
So there you go. Tungsten wedding bands are relatively inexpensive, can easily be removed in emergencies, and keep their original shine for longer than any other type of rings on the market.
